We’re not exactly sure where this “Hate Gingers” trend came from, but at Debra M Salon, we love red hair. If you feel like your hue quickly gets a bit drab after a treatment, follow these tricks to make your crimson color last longer.1. After getting your hair colored, wait a couple of days to wash it. If you wash too soon, your hair’s cuticle (the outer layer) can lift, which will let the color seep out. When you do shampoo, make sure to use color-protective products, like Color Protect Daily Shampoo from Paul Mitchell (we sell it in the salon!). 2. In general, try to skip a day in between shampoos. Sudsing up too often can cause your color to fade. If you have oily hair or if you workout a lot, use a dry shampoo in between washes. Try Paul Mitchell’s Express Dry Waterless Shampoo. 3. Your skin isn’t the only part of your body that needs protection from your sun. Harsh rays can damage your hair, too, making your color look dull before you know it. Before you head outside, spritz on SPF that’s specifically designed for hair, like Sun Shield Conditioning Spray from Paul Mitchell. 4. Don’t be swayed by those shampoos that have a hint of color - they may deposit too much pigment on your hair. Instead, head to the salon after a few weeks for a glaze or shine treatment in between full blown color sessions.
Hate frizz? Of course you do - nobody likes messy, wiry, frizzy hair. Follow these tips for keeping your hair shiny & gorgeous even on the hottest, most humid days this summer. 1. The very first thing you need in order to fight frizz is a great haircut. You need a cut and style that works with your natural texture, not against it. How will your stylist know what your true texture is if you always show up at the salon with styled hair? Next time you have a hair appointment, air dry your hair so that your stylist can see its natural state. 2. Don’t go more than 8 weeks between trims, no matter how long your hair is. If you can prevent your strands from getting split ends, you’ll help fight frizz naturally. Even if you’re trying to grow your hair out, regular trims will keep it healthy, which means it’ll grow faster than if it were damaged. 3. It’s hard to keep short hair in check during frizz season. Right after you wash and condition your hair, use a fine-tooth comb to arrange it however you want it to dry. While your hair is still damp, keep face-framing pieces in place with clips. Once your hair is dry, take the clips out and apply a dry way using your fingers. 4. If you blow dry your hair, use a nozzle attachment on your dryer, which will direct the heat down your hair shaft, straightening and smoothing your locks. Using a large round brush with boar bristles while blow drying will help, too. 5. On days that you’re going to let your hair dry naturally, keep your fingers out of it until it’s completely dry. Playing with it will create frizz. 6. Try to skip a shampoo and conditioner every other day. Washing your hair too often will strip your strands of their natural oils. Hydration is key to keep frizz at bay. Every Friday at Debra M Salon is Frizz Free Friday, now through August. For just $25, you can get a super straight blowout, smoothing & iron work. (This service is regularly $40.) Try these products from Paul Mitchell, many of which are available at Debra M Salon in Poughkeepsie:
Super Skinny Daily Shampoo Super Skinny Daily Treatment Super Skinny Serum Super Skinny Relaxing Balm Gloss Drops: Frizz Free Polish Straight Works: Smoothes & Controls We may still have a few lingering days of crisp, Autumn-like weather to deal with, but make no mistake about it: spring is here, which means bikini season is right around the corner. At Debra M Salon, we realize you’re busy working on your abs, but we’d like you to put a little thought into your ‘do, too. You wouldn’t dream of hitting the beach without slathering on SPF 30, right? (We hope!) Share some of that sun protection savvy with your mane! Your hair can get dried & fried just like your skin. Lucky for you, Paul Mitchell has a line of products intended for the poolside loungers & beach bums out there. While it may be wishful thinking, we’d love for you to use sun block for your locks whenever you spend time outdoors - after all, any amount of sun exposure can wreak havoc on shiny, lustrous hair. Sun Recovery Hydrating Shampoo The Sun Recovery Hydrating Shampoo is sulfate-free & offers UV protection (not to mention a yummy tropical scent). If the sun’s zapped the shine from your hair, this shampoo’s for you. Plus, it’s safe to use on color. After-Sun Replenishing Masque The After-Sun Replenishing Masque offers UV protection and instant hydration. Regretting not bringing a hat along to your beach weekend with the girls? Give your head the TLC it deserves. The UVeil Complex is ideal for even the more fragile strands. The Masque is also excellent to use in preparation for fun in the sun. Sun Shield Conditioning Spray The Sun Shield Conditioning Spray offers UV protection & tons of shine. Use is on fragile hair & colored locks - you’ll notice increased brilliance and super soft hair. Just make sure you spray before you head out the door.
