We love weddings any time of year, but autumn may just be our favorite season for something blue. Blushing brides (and their ‘maids) book appointments with Debra M Salon in Poughkeepsie all the time! Here are a few of our favorite looks for the most romantic day of your life.
It may remain hot for the first week or so of September, but Labor Day marks the end of summer & the start of a new, crisp season. Before August is a faint memory, here are nine warm-weather looks for the girl next door (and a bride or two).
Summertime weddings are bright, fresh and gorgeous. Unfortunately, they can also be hot, sticky and invaded by insects. Follow these tips to avoid common summer wedding mistakes. 1. Pick up a second round of boutonnieres. When it’s hot outside, fresh flowers will quickly wilt - you’ll want the guys to have new ones for the reception (and the photos). Better yet, invest in faux florals or other types of unique boutonnieres, like ones made from guitar picks or paper. 2. A few years ago, I went to an outdoor wedding with a gorgeous view of Hudson Valley hills. Unfortunately, we were facing the sun and we couldn’t hear a single vow over the whipping wind. Keep location, direction and weather in mind when planning an al fresco ceremony. 3. If you’re having a brunch ceremony or an afternoon reception, avoid scheduling your portraits for high noon. Yes, photographers love working with natural lighting, but when the sun is directly overhead, the light will be too harsh and you’ll get shadowy shots. 4. Even in mild conditions, you need some kind of shade during a summer wedding. Minimal seating under a canopy of trees or a small tented lounge area is enough to keep a smattering of guests comfortable when the sun bears down too much. 5. You’ve heard it a thousand times: if you’re planning an outdoor wedding, have a bad weather backup plan. 6. Make sure your baker knows that the cake’s going to be outside. Most icings will hold up even in warm conditions, but if the cake’s in direct sunlight, buttercream and ganache could melt. 7. Trim down the open bar’s hours. During cocktail hour, have the bartenders serve just non-alcoholic beverages, like flavored iced tea, pink lemonade and Italian soda. Hot summer sun and too much alcohol is a terrible combination.
8. Leave baskets of freebies in the powder rooms. Guests will appreciate sunscreen, blotters, bug spray, miniature water bottles, deodorant and mints, which they probably forgot to throw in their purse before leaving. There’s not much you can do about buying gifts for everyone on your list and getting together with family, but you can make anxiety-producing tasks a bit less daunting. 1. Think outside the box when it comes to where you shop. Bustling, crowded malls aren’t your only option. Pick up sweets for stocking stuffers the next time you’re at the grocery store. Get your daughter a makeup lesson gift certificate while your hairstylist works on your ‘do at a local Poughkeepsie salon. 2. Take three minutes to watch a funny YouTube video. Laughter relieves stress and pain, relaxes your muscles and stimulates blood flow. 3. Get to the gym. Your mind will be better equipped to deal with stress if your body’s been active. Plus, you’ll look better and it is engagement season. (Getting hitched? Debra M Salon provides wedding hair and makeup!) 4. Everything gets a little better when you’re sleeping well. Turn off your iPhone, “X” out Netflix and get. to. sleep. It won’t just help you reset so you can get everything done the next day; healthy sleep habits also protect against heart disease and cancer.
5. Just say “no.” Try it, it’ll feel great. No, you can’t host Girls’ Night this month. No, you can’t let your cousin crash at your house for a week. The answer’s “no” unless it’s for something that’ll make you feel more pulled together. Yes, you will head to the blow dry salon with your girl friend. Over the weekend, Debra's daughter Megan got married at The Grandview in Poughkeepsie, NY! Here are a collection of photos from the wedding day & elsewhere to help you plan your own fall wedding. Take a look at our bridal gallery when you get a chance, too!
