In a Sally Beauty survey, 80% of women said they can’t live without their flatiron & blowdryer. We love a good smoothing sesh as much as the next stylist, but once in a while it’s good to give your strands a break. Here are two ways to style your hair whether you want a laid back ‘do or some serious glam. Oh-So-Casual When you step out of the shower, spritz clean, damp hair with a salt texturizing spray, which will help you get that playfully disheveled look without going flat as the day goes on. Lift the top sections and spray at the roots for lift. Make two low pigtails, splitting each in two and twisting the pieces around each other. Use fabric bands to tie the ends and wind them against your head, pinning them in place. Once your hair’s dry, take the pigtails out and tousle with your fingers. Superbly Glam Believe it or not, you can get finger waves without going near a curling iron. When your hair’s damp, evenly deposit a quarter-size amount of medium-hold gel, starting one inch below your roots and raking it through to the ends. Comb your hair to make sure it’s evenly coated. Create a side part and twist three-inch sections of hair around your index finger. Pin the coils to your head, let your mane air dry, and then remove the clips. Pull gently on the curls to loosen them.

Love jewelry? Sparkly clips & headbands are jewelry for your hair! Whether you’re a bride-to-be or just glamming it up for a night out, we think you should add some flash to your locks. 4 Tips for Wearing Hair Accessories
1. Part your hair to the side and tease the roots of the larger section. Spray with hairspray, twist a couple of times, and put the barrette in place. By adding texture and a twist, the clip won’t slip - a major problem for anybody with fine hair. 2. Still can’t get that barrette to stay in place? Reinforce it with a couple of bobby pins. 3. Bring extra attention to your hair accessory by spritzing a shimmer spray on the locks near the clip. 4. Headbands are the easiest of hair accessories. Avoid a headache by wearing one that’s lined with fabric or elastic. We’ve all been there - you get your bangs cut after weeks of weighing the pros and cons, only to find out that there’s one big con you hadn’t considered: you hate how they look. Or, maybe you’ve had bangs as your signature look for years and you’re just over it. Either way, it’s time to prepare for the awkward, in between, I’m-growing-my-bangs-out phase. It won’t be fun. At times it won’t be pretty. But we’re here to help you make the most of these (bang) growing pains. The Ugly Truth: Hair grows at an approximate rate of half an inch per month. Eek! Be patient; you’ll get there. How to Bear Unbearable Bangs 1. PM Sculpting Foam is a lifesaver when your bangs just won’t do what you’re telling them to do. Bangs need to be trained to behave - like puppies, but not as cute. When your bangs are damp, apply a bit of styling foam, create an off-center part, and push the bangs to one side. Yes, we realize that you want your bangs to go, not stay, but getting rid of frayed ends will help them grow faster. 3. Master the art of the bobby pin, which can help you cheat while you’re still training your bangs. The angled part goes on the bottom, not the top. There are lots of bobbies to pick aside from basic black - find ones in a variety of colors, with fabric embellishments, or with sparkly bling.

It may remain hot for the first week or so of September, but Labor Day marks the end of summer & the start of a new, crisp season. Before August is a faint memory, here are nine warm-weather looks for the girl next door (and a bride or two).
When the spring rolls around, some of us girls love to get outside more - long strolls on The Walkway, pounding the pavement on the Rail Trail, hiking at Minnewaska. All that working out leaves little time for beauty, which is fine (and we approve of extra exercise!), but can mean bad things for your mop. Just because you’re working up a sweat, that doesn’t mean you have to hide your gorgeous locks under a baseball hat every day. Try these ‘dos that are especially made for gym chicks and other active gals. The Style: Create a deep side-part, then braid the front section (where your bangs are) across your forehead. Keep the braid secure by using a bobby pin at your temple. Pull the rest of your hair to the side and braid that section as well, securing it with a reliable band that won’t budge throughout the day. Perfect For: Climbing The Style: Part hair in the middle and twist one side along the crown until you reach the center of the back of your head. Use bobby pins to keep the twist in place - you’ll have a tail leftover, temporarily. Do the same twist on the other side; with this tail, twist it around the opposite side of your head so that it lines up with the first twist you made. Tuck the ends under and then keep it in place with bobby pins. Repeat the process with the leftover tail.

It sounds like something straight out of a cliquey high school cafeteria, but it happens in the real, grownup world, too. According to the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, men view brunettes as approachable, blondes as needy & gingers as snobbish. Personally, we think that you should choose your hair color based on how it makes you feel & how well it flatters your skin tone, not how the opposite sex will judge you at first glance. If you’re going to match your hair hue to your personality, read on. Blondes A mere 10% of the world is naturally blonde, which is why the color demands so much attention - it’s extremely rare. Golden blonde in particular is perfect on outgoing women, since it’s a fun and flirty color. It also simultaneously exudes sex appeal and innocence, which is the aspiration for most 20-somethings (and many women of all ages, come to think of it).
Redheads It’s not easy to be a bonafide ginger - only 2 to 6 percent of people born in the U.S. are redheads from the start. Since natural blondes are almost equally as rare, we’re not sure why auburn girls and guys get such a bad rap… Either way, the joke’s on all those naysayers, because redheads are perceived as outgoing, adventurous and passionate (plus a tad headstrong and willful). ‘Tis the season for being overwhelmed, frazzled and stressed out. There’s not much you can do about buying gifts for everyone on your list and getting together with family, but you can make anxiety-producing tasks a bit less daunting. 1. Think outside the box when it comes to where you shop. Bustling, crowded malls aren’t your only option. Pick up sweets for stocking stuffers the next time you’re at the grocery store. Get your daughter a makeup lesson gift certificate while your hairstylist works on your ‘do at a local Poughkeepsie salon. 2. Take three minutes to watch a funny YouTube video. Laughter relieves stress and pain, relaxes your muscles and stimulates blood flow. 3. Get to the gym. Your mind will be better equipped to deal with stress if your body’s been active. Plus, you’ll look better and it is engagement season. (Getting hitched? Debra M Salon provides wedding hair and makeup!) 4. Everything gets a little better when you’re sleeping well. Turn off your iPhone, “X” out Netflix and get. to. sleep. It won’t just help you reset so you can get everything done the next day; healthy sleep habits also protect against heart disease and cancer.
5. Just say “no.” Try it, it’ll feel great. No, you can’t host Girls’ Night this month. No, you can’t let your cousin crash at your house for a week. The answer’s “no” unless it’s for something that’ll make you feel more pulled together. Yes, you will head to the blow dry salon with your girl friend. You can never know too many beauty tips, can you? Here are 3 of our favorite tricks from Huffington Post articles to help you get even prettier than you already are. (P.S. Looking for top notch beauty supply items? Debra M Salon, a hair and nail salon in Poughkeepsie, sells makeup and Paul Mitchell products!) 1. Hydrate your hair, especially during the cold winter months. Weather and environment can wreak havoc on your locks, just like diet and poor haircare can. Regularly condition, use a deep conditioning mask every week and rub in a few drops of moisturizing oil both before and after flat ironing. Need more healthy hair tips? Your pillowcase may be causing your breakouts, not your addiction to French fries (although greasy foods probably aren’t helping). Pillowcases can get caked with dirt and oil, which clogs pores and results in blemishes. Wash and change your pillowcases regularly to prevent buildup. Cleaning them matters more than their material, but you should still choose natural fabrics, which breathe better and transfer less oil. Try to wash your pillowcases every three days and avoid using fabric softener. Read more about the link between pillowcases and acne here: Your Pillowcase Might Be Causing Your Breakouts 3. One of the best and most budget-friendly makeup removers around is baby oil, especially when it comes to getting rid of hard-to-remove makeup, like mascara, heavy eyeshadow and liquid liner. Plus, baby oil is extra gentle on skin. Ready to brush up on your makeup application tips? Stop in to our hair salon in Poughkeepsie NY for makeup lessons!
