Even if you’ve never added quinoa to your diet, it may be time to add it to your beauty regime. This trend is catching on quickly - Paul Mitchell products are now including the delicious ingredient. Eating quinoa is undoubtedly healthy, what with all its minerals, antioxidants, fatty acids and protein. When it comes to beauty products, there are two different types of quinoa being used:
1. Hydrolyzed Quinoa: Commonly used in hair and skin products, this type of quinoa contains protein just from the grain. Translation: It’s not as potent as the quinoa you eat for breakfast. It’s used in Paul Mitchell’s Ultimate Color Repair collection to strengthen hair and prevent damage. 2. Quinoa Seed Extract: This moisturizes hair and skin, and also protects against free radicals. Ready for a Paul Mitchell treatment? Come in to our Poughkeepsie hair salon! Vacation is all fun and games, until you glance in the mirror post-flight and realize your skin is in a rage. You didn’t do anything different with your skincare routine, so what gives? The truth is, even products you use all the time can wreak havoc on your skin when you’re traveling because the low humidity on airplanes may damage your skin barrier. You’re still using the same ol’ product, but your skin itself is different, which causes a new reaction. Read on for a few easy ways to master skincare when traveling.
The Fix After your flight, train ride or road trip, your skin will need time to recover, so keep it simple. Use a back-to-basics skincare regime when traveling, especially if you’re going from one climate to another. Stick with a gentle cleanser and a hydrating moisturizer, and leave it at that. If you’re staying at your destination for a while, you can go back to your nightly mask and other fancy skincare techniques after a few days. “But my skin is already driving me nuts!” You don’t need to book an emergency appointment with an unfamiliar dermatologist, at least not yet. Try over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment first. The ointment is slimier than the cream, but since it doesn’t have preservatives, it won’t irritate your skin further. If the itchiness and redness don’t go away after one week, it’s time to book that appointment - you may need a prescription for a more potent product. One More Thing... Remember, the skin around your eyes and on your upper cheeks is more thin and sensitive than in other areas. It’s common for this area to get dermatitis when traveling, either from an allergy, sensitivity or another type of irritation. Developed in Italy by leading color experts, The Color XG from Paul Mitchell covers gray 100% and is available in 86 mixable shades. Work with your stylist to create the perfect hue for your hair! The red shades are particularly vibrant; check out the before & after below. (You can also get that sleek blowout every Friday for just $25.) How many times have you spent an hour or more curling your hair, only to realize once you leave the house that there’s some weird piece sticking, like, straight up? Or after meticulously curling your locks, the ringlets just fall out before you reach your event? Or, somehow, you end up with frizz, even though it’s not even humid outside? You haven’t yet mastered the art of the curling iron. You’re not alone, either. This Poughkeepsie salon has seen our share of hairstyles gone wrong. Here are the most common curling iron infractions and how to fix them. Read on for eight tips for using a curling iron. 1. You didn’t prep your hair. If you want a good curl, your hair has to be prepped. Otherwise, your hair’s “foundation” won’t be strong enough to hold the style. Apply a heat-protecting product, then blow dry your hair thoroughly. This will close the hair cuticle, which will help the curl to hold. If your hair is normally straight as a pin, mist it with a bit of hairspray before curling. Check out Paul Mitchell’s line for curly girls if you’re in need of product replenishment! 2. You’re curling in the wrong direction. Before you start using the iron, part your hair in the direction it’s going to stay. This’ll help you figure out the right direction to twist the iron. Curl away from your face for a natural look. 3. You’re twirling the iron, not your hair. You probably clip the end of your hair into the iron, then twist it up toward your head, right? You’re going to get a Shirley Temple-esque barrel curl or a Farrah Fawcett-like flip, not a natural wave. Instead, face the barrel (the hot part of the iron) down to the floor and wrap your hair around it, starting from your roots and working your way to the ends. Also, don’t twist your hair before winding it around the iron. 4. The curling iron’s too big. If you have a collection of curling irons at home because you think you need various sizes for different hairstyles, think again: you really only need one, and it should have a 1-inch barrel. If you want bigger, looser waves, just take a bigger section of hair. 5. You bought a curling iron on clearance. We love a bargain as much as the next girl, but if you’re curling your hair a lot, you need a quality iron. Shopping around for a new hot iron? We carry Paul Mitchell tools right in the hair salon! 6. Your curls are too perfect. When curling your hair, the sections shouldn’t all be the same size. Varying how much hair you curl at one time will give you a more natural look. For an undone look, don’t curl all the way down to the ends. 7. You’re leaving your hair in the iron for too long.
Curling irons are hot, ladies. You probably know this because you’ve undoubtedly burned yourself a time or two. Avoid using the hottest setting available, especially if you have fine or fragile hair. Never leave your hair clamped for longer than three seconds. Read 4 Types of Hair Damage and Professional Solutions if you’ve done serious damage to your mane. 8. You play with your hair the second you’re finished styling. We know you love those bouncy ringlets, but let your hair cool down before you start to tousle. The curl needs time to set. When you immediately run your hands through your freshly styled hair, you’ll promote frizz and make the curls unravel. Once your hair’s cooled down, keep the style set by misting your hair with a finishing spray. Put a little bit on your hands, too, and crunch your ends. For a natural, almost-messy curl, break up the cooled down rings with your fingers. Need a hair demo or a brand new cut? Contact our hair salon in Poughkeepsie NY today! Whether you paid a stylist to blowout your hair or you put in the work yourself, your goal is the same: make it last. According to Allure, you can make your blowout last for up to five days when cared for correctly. Here’s how: 1. At night, use scrunchies (yup, good ol’ scrunchies) to tie your hair into either a low pony tail or two Princess Leia buns. Shop at Debra M Salon in Poughkeepsie for adorable hair accessories. 2. Sleep on silk or satin pillowcases. 3. In the shower, pull on a shower cap, ideally one lined with terry cloth. 4. When your roots start to droop, don’t automatically grab dry shampoo, which will get rid of all that shininess you loved the day before. Instead, add volume by spritzing a paddle brush with light-hold hair spray, flipping your head upside down, and brushing out the roots. 5. Use dry texturing spray, which is a combination of dry shampoo and hair spray. It’ll give your hair some extra volume and structure. Turn your head upside down, use up to three spritzes from roots to ends, then tousle with your fingers. For girls with thick hair, use a small dab of moisturizing cream on the ends. For girls with fine hair, use a bit of dry conditioner. 6. If you wake up with a serious case of bed head, spritz your locks with a little bit of water. You’ll get body without weighing your hair down or adding more product. Let your hair air dry, then add a little bit of dry shampoo to your roots and tousle. Smooth with a very quick run-through with the flatiron. 7. If there’s no covering up that your hair’s a bit dirty now, go with the texture by using salt spray to play up the piecey separation. The salt will also help to get rid of the oil and product buildup. Braid or twist your hair, or top off your style with a headband.

Products & Tools Mentioned in This Article: Face it: you’re damaged. Not emotionally, of course. We’re talking about hair-wise. According to Unilever, 92% of women have some type of hair damage. Here are four common beauty problems and our professional advice for fixing them. Need a serious treatment? Make an appointment with Debra M Salon - we have a host of Paul Mitchell products and tools to treat and style any mane. Problem: Your hair is breaking off and it’s horrifying. The cuticle layer is way too thin, which is making your hair break, most likely at the ends, the crown, and the hairline - all the weaker points. Solution: A hair mask to repair, recover, and strengthen. The right one will have fortifiers, like keratin and wheat protein. Problem: Your hair has more split ends than healthy ends. The protective layer is dehydrated, making it crack (just like your skin). Solution: A leave-in conditioner that will seal the ends. Want to know the science behind this? There’s some positive and negative ion stuff going on, so come on in [ http://www.debramsalon.com/services.html ] for a repair and a beauty lesson. Problem: Your hair feels like hay. Dry, dry hay. Your hair’s been fried, which means it’s porous, which means it’s not retaining moisture the way it should. Solution: You need to get moisture in there somehow while your hair heals and an oil mist is a great option. Bonus: It won’t weigh down even the finest of strands. Problem: Your hair growth has halted. Truth? It hasn’t really stopped growing altogether - it’s probably breaking as it’s growing, which makes it seem like it’s not getting any longer.
Solution: A leave-on treatment spray should help it grow faster than it breaks. In a Sally Beauty survey, 80% of women said they can’t live without their flatiron & blowdryer. We love a good smoothing sesh as much as the next stylist, but once in a while it’s good to give your strands a break. Here are two ways to style your hair whether you want a laid back ‘do or some serious glam. Oh-So-Casual When you step out of the shower, spritz clean, damp hair with a salt texturizing spray, which will help you get that playfully disheveled look without going flat as the day goes on. Lift the top sections and spray at the roots for lift. Make two low pigtails, splitting each in two and twisting the pieces around each other. Use fabric bands to tie the ends and wind them against your head, pinning them in place. Once your hair’s dry, take the pigtails out and tousle with your fingers. Superbly Glam Believe it or not, you can get finger waves without going near a curling iron. When your hair’s damp, evenly deposit a quarter-size amount of medium-hold gel, starting one inch below your roots and raking it through to the ends. Comb your hair to make sure it’s evenly coated. Create a side part and twist three-inch sections of hair around your index finger. Pin the coils to your head, let your mane air dry, and then remove the clips. Pull gently on the curls to loosen them.

1. Part your hair to the side and tease the roots of the larger section. Spray with hairspray, twist a couple of times, and put the barrette in place. By adding texture and a twist, the clip won’t slip - a major problem for anybody with fine hair. 2. Still can’t get that barrette to stay in place? Reinforce it with a couple of bobby pins. 3. Bring extra attention to your hair accessory by spritzing a shimmer spray on the locks near the clip. 4. Headbands are the easiest of hair accessories. Avoid a headache by wearing one that’s lined with fabric or elastic. |
